Physical Education, Health and Wellness

Physical Education

Our Vision

Through our physical education curriculum, students will acquire the knowledge and skills to value, appreciate, and participate in lifelong physical activity and fitness.

Our Philosophy

Physical Education is an integral part of the curriculum that, through human movement, concentrates on the development of individuals' maximum physical potential and their related social, emotional, and intellectual growth.  As a result of physical education, students are more likely to be better prepared as productive students, workers, and contributors to their communities and organizations within society.  As physical educators, we take pride in the physical education curriculum and programs of the Woodland Park Re-2 School District.  The discipline's primary purpose is to assist the learner in developing:

  1. Total physical fitness and lasting desire to maintain it;
  2. Movement abilities ranging from functional life skills to those needed for successful participation in leisure activities of their choice;
  3. A sense of self-worth and dignity;
  4. Social skills and acceptance;
  5. Safety awareness; and
  6. An appreciation and understanding of specific sports and dances, including their origins, cultural impact, and aesthetic values.

The physically educated student will have acquired competencies applicable to lifetime activities and a desire to retain the healthy feeling associated with fitness and exercise.

Health Education

Our Vision

 Woodland Park School District will improve educational achievement by providing our students with the knowledge and health-enhancing skills needed to develop healthy lifestyles.

Our Philosophy

Health and success in school are interrelated.  We believe a healthy lifestyle can have a positive impact in all areas of learning.

The goal of our comprehensive health education curriculum is to have our students become knowledgeable about what constitutes physical, psychological and social wellness.  Therefore, it is our desire to enpower our students with the skills and positive attitudes they need to make informed decisions to promote their own lifelong health and well-being.  We recognize the diversity of values which exists in our community and understand and respect that our students will interpret the information we present in the context of the perceptions and experiences they bring with them.

We endeavor to develop health literate individuals who are:

  • critical thinkers and problem solvers when confronting health problems and issues
  • self-directed learners who have the competence to use basic health information and services in health-enhancing ways
  • effective communicators who organize and convey beliefs, ideas, and information about health issues
  • responsible and productive citizens who help ensure their community is kept healthy, safe and secure

Health Curriculum

Woodland Park School District's curriculum is aligned with National Standards (currently there are no Colorado State Standards for Health).  At the elementary level, the curriculum is built around 7 main topics including Safety; Emotional Well-Being and Violence Prevention; Personal Health; Nutrition; Drugs, Alcohol and Tobacco Prevention; Physical Activity; and Growth and Development.  Classroom teachers at the Woodland Park Middle School deliver a series of health lessons using Second Step.  Students at Woodland Park High School take one semester of Health education using a combination of Glencoe textbook, Discovery Health and guest speakers on specific topics.

Parent Exemptions for Health Education

Parents may request an exemption to portions of a health curriculum on the grounds that it is contrary to their religious beliefs.  A request for the exemption must be submitted in writing to the principal prior to the lesson or activity.  If accepted, an alternate activity will be given to the child.

Wellness Policy

Woodland Park School District is committed to providing a school environment that enhances the learning and development of lifelong behaviors.  The District has adopted a Wellness Policy which is evaluated every year.  The District's Wellness Committee meets at least twice a year to review the progress toward our school wellness policy goals and identify areas for improvement.
